Department of Psychiatry and Mental Health is one of the departments in the School of Medicine. It is located at the Main Campus, Kenyatta University. The department was housed within the Department of Medicine , Therapeutics, dermatology & Psychiatry since the inception of Medical School in 2007 until April, 2020 that it became a full fledged department.

The department has the mandate of training and mentoring professional mental health service providers that would be able to provide preventive, promotive and clinical care required for a mentally healthy nation and globe. We also engage in research and community activities in line with our University Philosophy and mission.

The department has qualified academic staff committed to teaching as well as undertaking research and consultancy services in mental and psychological areas.The staff train undergraduate MBChB students in year 3, 4, and 6, and are engaged in all areas of clinical psychiatry and behavioural sciences.

The students use both Kiambu level 5 hospital and Mathari National teaching and Referral hospital for their training. They also engage in community psychiatry services as outreach clinics from Mathari TRRH and as part of University outreach programmes as part of community social responsibility.


OTHER COURSES PLANNED

The department is planning to initiate the Master of Medicine Psychiatry Programme to increase number of specialists in Psychiatry and boost future training and service provision. Also short courses that are responsive to fill in the gaps I current services provided
